His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, witnessed the opening of the 30th Sharjah International Book Fair 2011 this morning in the presence of the of HH Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, HH Sheikh Abdullah Bin Salem Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah at the Sharjah Expo Centr.
The opening ceremony began by gracing his Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, sponsor of the event, where he was welcomed by Sheikha Bodour daughter of Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Chairman of the Council of the UAE for youngs books

This was followed in the first part of the ceremony, with a speech by His Excellency Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Owais, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Media in Sharjah in which he said / / in the most beautiful meanings of love and brotherhood, and purest breezes of dew flowers, Sharjah welcomes her esteemed guests, who glowed the land of the United Arab Emirates to fulfill its happiness
and joy of all that is national Arabic in the presence of the celebrated Sharjah International Book / /. And added Al Owais / / we come to you today with a new stage within the journey of giving and development sponsored by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the march which began its first steps from thirty years, taking off from its local origins, integrating with its surrounding Arab countries, to launch Globally afterwards, where the sacred humanitarian goals His Highness yearned for to complete the noble endeavor to serve and defend the Arab culture. The results of the benevolent efforts through the cultural dialogues in international forums are now visible through the Arab culture occupying its rightful place among nations.
Later then, a short film reviewed the passing of 30 years journey on the Sharjah International Book Fair of the production of Sharjah Media Foundation.
Follwed was the speech of HE Khalid bin Mohammed Al Anqari Minister of Higher Education in Saudi Arabia, the guest of honor for the session 30 of the Sharjah International Book Fair who welcomed the audience and raised the deepest thanks and appreciation to His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah on the unique hospitality in the event, the vast cultural demonstration and inviting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as a guest of honor of the exhibition.
After that, Abdulaziz, Trim Director General of Etisalat in the Northern Emirates provided his speech on this occasion in which he said: “In the beginning it’s a great honor to be with you today a representative of Etisalat” in this international cultural event, which reflects the elite status of the book in the United Arab Emirates in general and the Emirate of Sharjah in particular, and interest in this event comes from our firm faith that supporting and sponsoring the “book” and supervising of its activities is a responsibility and commitment before it is a matter of honor and pride.”
And further to schedule and events ceremony His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, accompanied by His Excellency Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Owais and Ahmad Bin Rakkad Ameri distributed Sharjah International Book Fair awards, which included cultural personality of the year award that has been obtained by Mr. Mohammed Bin Isa from Kingdom of Morocco, the Chairman of the Municipal Council for Acila city and General Secretary of the
Moroccan Foundation Forum, and best publishing houses went to each of the Universal Publishing and distribution Foundation (Abu Dhabi) as the best local publishing house, and Dar AlSaqi (Lebanon) as the best Arab publisher, the Jashanmal Foundation for publication and distribution (Dubai) as the best foreign publishing house.
With regard to the local creative works, the award of the best Emarati writer on the best emarati book (emarati author) went equally between each of Abdul Latif Abdou Said Al Azazi and that for his book (the footprint of events and body memory) and Khaled Mohammed Al Maskari and that for his book (directory practical for commercial correspondence), and awarded the best emarati book in the field of studies was writer Reem alIssawi and that for her book (mirror reflections in listing self) to Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi), and the award for the best emarati printed book on the UAE went to Gulf News and that for the book (the rise of the nation’s thirtieth year in pictures).
A special share went to Arab and global literary works as well, through access to the best foreign general book for Profile Books Publishing House for the book (why the West governs so far) for the writer Ian Morris, while the award went to the best foreign book in the field of trade and economy of the University Press Chicago for the book (the dignity of the bourgeoisie) to its author Dred Mac Liwski, and the Albert White Mann House and his partners won the best foreign book prize in the field of the child and this for the book (goodbye cancer Park) of the author Lijana Mathiz.
His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, honors the distribution of awards which included Cultural Personality of the Year Award and the Best Publishing House award that was shared by local, Arab & foreign publishing houses. With regards to local creative works, the awards were distributed to the Emarati local writer for the best Emarati book (Emarati author), the best Emarati book in the field of studies, best Emarati book in the field of preparation & translation, and the best Emarati book printed for the UAE. A special share in the awards was for the Arab and global literary works by acquiring the award of best Arabic book printed in the Sharjah International Book Fair, best general English book award, the award for best trade and economy English book, and the award for best child English book.
Subsequently came the time for honoring the sponsors of the exhibition, activities and programs of the Sharjah International Book Fair at its thirtieth session, and they are: Sharjah Media Foundation and Chamber of Commerce and Industry Sharjah (Sharjah Expo Centre) and Emirates Eitisalat Corporation – Etisalat, Sharjah Investment and Development Organization (Shourouq). Later Mohammed Hassan Omran, Chairman of Etisalat, HE Abdulaziz Trim General Director of Etisalat in the Northern Emirates were invited to deliver Etisalat award to the children’s book for 2011 & the jury of the award was initially honored, consisting of Dr Sabah alIssawi and Wafaa Turnoska and Wendy Collenj and Taghreed Najjar and Walid Taher.
As for the one million dirhams Etisalat award for Children’s Book, won the book (avian my pilot) from the Egypt renaissance house of Arab Republic of Egypt, written by the writer Amani Ashmawi and Rousoum Hanadi Saleet.
Then Emirates Eitsalat Corporation presented a shield of thanks and gratitude for His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah on the occasion of his patronage and continuous support of culture, intellectuals and writers.

Also during the ceremony His Excellency Mohammed Al Murr was invited to present his new book “Creations from the UAE” for his Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council of the Federation, Ruler of Sharjah & sponsor f the event.
Then, the Union of Arab publishing was invited to provide a shield of thanks and gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi submitted by Mohammed Ali Baydoun, General Secretary of the Union.
Following was inviting the Federation of Egyptian publishing to provide a shield of thanks and gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi.
In a grateful gesture HE Ahmed bin Rakkad AlAmri, Director of Sharjah International Book Fair, presented the shield of thanks and gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member of the Federation, Ruler of Sharjah which is a work of art for the international artist Carlos Marenas a carved piece symbols the literary works of his Highness as well as his great efforts and bright visions which transferred Sharjah Book Fair from local to regional and then to the World during the period of thirty years of giving, granting and good guidance.
After that was the panorama presentation of the “Harvest of Years” book, followed by the signing of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi the first copy of the “Harvest of Years” book. At the end of the ceremony was the official opening of Sharjah International Book Fair 2011.
A comprehensive tour was taken by His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah accompanied by His Highness the Crown Prince of Sharjah & His Highness the Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, for all the galleries and wings of the exhibition of local, Arab and foreign countries.
He began his tour in Saudi Arabia Pavilion the guest of honor of the exhibition and suites of institutions and agencies of the Sharjah Government as Sharjah Media Foundation and Information Department and EGovernment and the Universities of Sharjah and American university in Sharjah and the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services. He also visited a number of Arab and foreign publishing houses participating in the exhibition, and examined the role played by those institutions praising their role in enriching the Arab culture and the world, &their care and interest in the book and the authors.
And through the presence of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah in the Qasimi publications wing he marked his signature on a number of copies of his new book (harvest years), which dates thirty years of cultural work in the emirate of Sharjah.
His Highness also visited the Words House for publication wing where Sheikha Boudoor daughter of Sultan Al Qassimi & Sheikha Maryam Karimtha daughter of Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qassimi, presented him a memorial gift represented by a precious box that includes 7 books of the publication house for children on the occasion of 40th National Day of the United Arab Emirates.
During the tour, he stopped on the wing of the Supreme Council for Family and pavilion project “Culture without Borders” and listened through the officials about the most important and latest publications and activities undertaken by them and he encouraged them to give careful attention to the family and the individual, which constitutes the core of these families.
At the end of his tour His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah was keen to attend side of the dialogue in the cultural cafe “Shouruoq” which was moderated by Mr. Mohammed Diab Al Mousa with Dr. Ahmad Qasem, first members of the educational mission in Sharjah in 1952 as a witness on the development and renaissance of Sharjah culturally & scientifically.
Compared with previous edition of the SIBF, this year witnessed an increase in the number of activities and participants as the number of participating publishing houses last year was 789 while 894 Arab & Global publishing houses participated this year. As for the titles of books available in the exhibition, there will be approximately 300,000 titles while it was 200,000 titles last year. And regarding the total activities there will be a significant increase in the number in this session by 435 activities compared with 235 activities in last year’s session. Furthermore, 24 Arab countries will participate in the Arabic section with an increase of two from last year. English Section is the only exception as it hosts 21 counties which were 25 in the SIBF 2010.
This year SIBF will host more than 200 various activities, matching all audience by age and category, as well as cookery program which hosts 12 Chefs representing 11 Arab and International kitchens.
